Façade System FACID M

Modular frame system for multifunctional textile façade with wide range of designs and uses

Sustainable construction increasingly includes the entire lifecycle of buildings, which means that the demand for functionality and flexibility in façades is always on the rise too. With the modular frame system for textile Schüco FACID façades, the external appearance of a building can be quickly and efficiently adapted to changing requirements without limiting its function – a key milestone on the path towards the transformative façade.

Be it as a suspended, rear-ventilated façade, as an additional decorative level or as a combined façade, the modular frame system of Schüco FACID M opens up a wide selection of design options with suitability for digital printing and attractive lighting options. A wide variety of fabrics is available depending on the requirements and building type.

Further benefits of the modular frame which is easy to pre-assemble include outstanding technical properties combined with durability and multifunctional applications.

Fabrication benefits

  • Innovative components enable optimum works planning: simple and efficient thanks to prefabrication and quick installation without expensive special tools or machinery
  • A number of different module shapes are possible: pre-fabrication while the building is in use and delivered to the project ready to install
  • Installation on the façade ideally by means of rear hook-in brackets
  • Simple, fast installation, even in areas and existing buildings that are difficult to reach

System description of FACID M as a decorative façade

The FACID M system is a fabric façade, whereby the fabric is clamped all the way around with aluminium profiles. Self-reinforcing aluminium frames are installed with the façade fabric.

The system essentially consists of extruded aluminium basic profiles in which a façade fabric approved by Schüco International KG is inserted and includes patented aluminium flexholders for fixing. Where PTFE-coated fibreglass fabric is used, an additional coated, patented aluminium flexholder is inserted. The clamping channels in the basic profiles must be closed off using cover profiles. The profiles are installed on the building outer wall as complete, self-supporting frames, for example with hook-in points. In order to prevent the frame from contracting due to the clamping of the fabric, reinforcing profiles are required for large frame formats at a spacing of approx. 1.5 m. The basic depth of the substructure varies.

The profiles can be installed on the façade horizontally, vertically and diagonally. When installing, ensure that the aluminium profiles can expand sufficiently. The system stipulates a fabric grammage of at least 400 g/m². As a basic principle, only fabric that has been tested by Schüco International KG and approved for the system may be used, otherwise guarantee claims cannot be made.

Profile cutting:
The FACID M profiles must be cut for the profile transition. To this end, the aluminium profiles measuring 6 m long as standard are mitre cut. As clip-on cover profiles are sometimes used on the mitre cuts of the basic profiles, this may only be done when the profile is powder-coated or anodised.

Frame composition:
FACID M frames reinforced with struts can be fully mounted in the workshop (including fabric). FACID M frames without struts can be pre-assembled in the workshop. The fabric is then installed on the building site once the frame is installed on the substructure.

Fabric manufacture:
To ensure that the fabric façade has a uniform appearance, the fabric on one side of the façade must come from one production batch of the fabric manufacturer. Furthermore, when installing the fabric façade, ensure that the fabric is always mounted in the same direction, i.e. the roll direction or warp direction of the fabric must always have the same alignment.

Installation – general:
Before attaching the aluminium profiles and the fabric, the contracted company must ensure that the substructure is mounted properly in accordance with the statics and the current state of the art.
The fabric can be transported on a roll and should be well secured during transport to ensure that it is not damaged. For this, the fabric can be mounted on roll cores, for example. To make installation easier, the visible side of the fabric must point towards the middle of the roll core. Furthermore, when installing PVC-coated polyester fabrics and PTFE fibreglass fabrics, it must be ensured that the installation temperature does not fall below +5°C, as at temperatures under +5°C the fabric becomes increasingly stiff, creases emerge and the fabric may be damaged.
Installation is generally possible from scaffolding and cherry pickers/scissor platforms. If installation takes place from scaffolding, the contracted company should plan the scaffolding anchor points in the façade in advance.

Installation of the FACID M frame:
The FACID M basic profiles must be fixed to the substructure (which is positioned on a load-bearing building façade) in accordance with the requirements of the defining statics. Sliding and fixed bearing points must be considered in accordance with the statics.

Installing the cover profiles:
All cover profiles must be secured with self-tapping V2A stainless steel screws in the basic profiles with a distance between screws of max. 1.5 m. The FACID basic profiles should be pre-drilled.
The screw heads can be painted in the colour of the cover profiles.

Assessment of the fabric tensioning:
Once the fabric has been clamped on all sides, the fabric surface must be free of folds.
